A Bug's Life Cuisine + Giveaway(s)

While in New Mexico last week, I was reading National Geographic Magazine and came across this little article about bugs, more so how the Food and Agriculture Organization is working on a policy to promote insects as FOOD worldwide.   Turns out, beetles, crickets and many others are rather...um....nutritious.  A serving of small grasshoppers, for instance, packs nearly the same protein punch as ground beef.  And insects can be farmed more cheaply and on much less land.  The FAO sees insect farming as a move towards food security - a subject for its upcoming conference on entomophagy, the practice of insect eating.

Uh....I have one word:   YUCK!

I'm skittish eating anything with eyeballs still intact and crunches when I bit down - not that I ever tried, and not that I'm ever going to, but I know I'd never make a great contestant on that show "Fear Factor".  I can't even stand the site of these things....this blog post isn't going to be able to stay up too long because I don't want to look at them.

Anyway...

I did find the article interesting and wondered how many of these critters you would actually have to eat to consume 100g (more than I am willing to try!).  So while combing Old Town in Albuquerque one fine afternoon (and eating a couple veggie tacos, thank you) I came across a tasty little treat:

A little blurry, sorry  - it's hard to get a good image of a  Scorpion Sucker.  That's right, your eyes read correctly, I saw this little tasty treat and since the article of eating bugs was still fresh on my mind, I thought I had to get this little guy and even better - I had to GIVE IT AWAY to all you nutrition freak endurance junkies!!  That's right, you heard it here - the blog world's first ever Scorpion Sucker Giveaway!!

Don't worry, the sucker is apple flavored so all you gotta do is lick away - lick, lick, lick, at some de-lish artificially apple-flavored sugar until you get to the tasty scorpion anxiously waiting for you inside.  It's like having your dessert first and then getting your meal - loaded with rich fuel loading carbohydrates to make your run strong and satisfying.

I know you'll all be rushing to leave the blog so you can leave your comment to win this scrumptious delicacy...but wait, I'm not done yet.  Ok, I am done with the critter giveaway, but since I was approached by the nice folks at CSN stores awhile back to give away a gift card, I thought I'd throw the generous $45 gift card in to whomever won the sucker.  Yep, TWO awesome things to win.  I'm just nice like that.

CSN is comprised of over 200 online stores, selling everything from dining room chairs to fitness equipment. A great store with so much stuff it'll pop on over and see what you'd use the gift card for:
http://www.csnstores.com/

I can't do these giveaways often, this isn't really the way I want to take the ole blog, so get out there while you can and win something super cool from Jill.

There's twowo ways to win, leave a separate comment for each:
1) Tell me what you think of eating bugs, before this post and then again after reading it.
2) Tell me what you'd buy with the CSN gift card (don't forget the holidays are coming up and your favorite blogger, Jill, needs some presents!).

Total fun, eh??!!!  I'll keep the contest open for a week, until midnight of November 11th, so don't lolly-gag, get busy commenting.

In other news - I had my interview today for the new job *sigh*.  I don't think it went so well *sigh*.  I got all discombobulated with the first question, omitting half of what I wanted to say, and it only went more sour after that.  I don't know how many times I used marathon training as an example of accomplishing my goals and how organized I was (read: anal retentive) - I'm sure they were sick of hearing it *sigh*.  Will find out by the middle of next week, but I'm not holding my breath.  I am grateful I was dwindled down to the final 6 of the 98 which applied - that in itself is an accomplishment.  I guess. *sigh*

A big shout-out to Brian, a guy I've been working with for a very long time, who is running the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon this weekend.  He has overcome a vast amout of diveristy from injury to job issues; I couldn't be more proud he's still giving his race a go.  Good luck, Brian - I know it will go very well!!

So anyway, I know I said I'd do the coachy thing today but it took all my strength to do the giveaway so will work on that this weekend when I'm not so sulky and can think more clearly.  It's coming - promise.

Until then, happy miles....and next time you're out running and see a little critter on the street, don't step on it, pick it up, pop it in your mouth, and your run may be oh so much better!!

This is timely, since last night my 5 year old and us were talking about nutrition trying to show him that he really needs to eat other things for dinner besides pizza, to which he replied that he tried ants last year in preschool II and "they taste like nothing". Me thinks that it may be easier for me to get him to eat insects rather than anything else I try. And if they are crunchy, that's a huge benefit as he loves his crunchies.

Aimee said...

YUCK! That is what I think about eating bugs! However, if I was ever stranded and needed some form of nutrition, I think I would force myself to eat whatever I could! But, YUCK!

Gee, I thought all runners ate bugs. I have swallowed millions of mosquitos and nats over the years. After reading this blog I was thinking of a new Cajun dish, Red Ants and Rice, Yum! I would cook it in my Hearthware Nuwave Oven purchased at CSN and we would sit down and dine on our all new Paula Dean Home Sweet Tea 5 Piece Kitchen Gathering table sale priced at just under $1,900.00 from CSN. Jeepers, eating bugs used to give me the willies, now I think I would like a heaping helping of chocolate covered grasshoppers for dessert and I'll wash em down with waterbugs! By the way, I would still hire you, can you start Monday? Bubbles

Aimee said...

If I won, I think I would buy some sort of fitness equipment or kitchen appliance! :)

I'm sure you did fine, but I'm sorry the interview didn't go as well as you would have liked!

C2Iowa said...

In advance training I did partake of some insects. I could do it again (if needed) but never a scorpion!

I think it was Anthony Bourdain who was munching crispy crickets in one of his No Reservations show. He claimed they were quite good. Hmm... I think, I would pass.

Funny, before reading this, I just published my post about having a giveaway with nasty stuff I can get in China. The only this is..... I was joking and you're serious here. You ARE a science geek :-)

racing dawn said...

Pretty sure I would never eat bugs to get my protein in for the day. That's just wrong...even if there is a ton of sugar around it!

racing dawn said...

I need some new bedding! Forget Christmas gifts - that's months away! :)

Char said...

I was just wondering if the fat in those bugs is saturated or unsaturated and if the LDL's are high.

L.B. said...

Bugs! Cool. I've had bugs before. I had some crickets when I went to Mexico City in August 2009. They were cooked, prepared in garlic. I took a picture of it before chowing down.

I wouldn't say they were my favorite thing ever but I'd be open to eating more. Maybe not every morning or everything but I'm not opposed to it, especially after reading their nutritional benefits.

L.B. said...

If I were to have the chance to buy something from CSN, I'd get me a chef's knife. I need a bona fide knife, that can cut anything, anywhere, anytime. My knives are dull. I want a sharp knife so I can tear me apart some red bell peppers and onions in record time.

Kenley said...

I have eaten chocolate covered ants before, and a grasshopper head for money. hehehe. I love bugs, I love to put them on the grill for fun. lol. I didn't know that grasshoppers had that much protein. Hmmmmmmm. Grasshopper recovery drink. Best wishes on some good results. And yeah, CSN is pretty cool.

Questionably Texan said...

Sorry the job interview didn't go to well. With regards to the contest, I don't foresee myself chomping down on any bugs in the near future - not exactly a vegan treat!

Questionably Texan said...

From CSN Stores, I would probably buy a new gym bag (since I don't actually own one), and possibly some random kitchen gadget.

saundra said...

I think I would try the grasshoppers, but not the ants and certainly not the water bugs. Looks more appetizing than worms...

I would purchase something for the empty dining room.

I've eaten my share of bugs running and cycling, so it doesn't gross me out too much. If you eat canned food, there's a certain amount of bug parts allowed by the USDA, so we're all eating some pretty much on a daily basis.

Tammigirl said...

Before reading this article I found the idea of eating a bug pretty darn gross.

After reading this article I find the idea of eating a bug... pretty darn gross!

That's just more for all the people who want to eat them, though. Right?

Oh! Oh! Oh! I know what I want from CSN!

I want some paintable beadboard wallpaper.

And if it never comes back in stock?

I would like some Oneidea flatware - Boston Colonial.

Okay, I will not eat bugs. There I said it.

Marlene said...

EWWWWWWW! I can't say my opinion of eating bugs has changed before/after reading this post. Just plain NASTY! I had to eat a cricket at the City Chase this year and that was more than enough for me, protein or not!

Are you serious about the sucker? LOL!

Count me in!

As for CSN, I need a new blender so I can start making my insect... I mean SPINACH smoothies again!

RunToTheFinish said...

ok have to stop laughing first. So i am not a fan of the whole eating bugs thing, I know a lot of countries do.. I would probably only give in if I were on survivor and starving

Lindsay said...

umm. all i got out of this post was bugs and csn. :) sorry but i will have nightmares for weeks so i couldn't look at the pics or read the words haha. but i still sorta-skimmed so i could comment... that counts for something right?

(oh, don't count me on the CSN - i have already won one and given one away so i think i'm good) ;)

I would get a coffee grinder because mine broke and this morning I was taking a meat tenderizing hammer to a baggie full of beans trying to crush them so I could stop shaking and get my damn coffee!! Bugs are just gross Jill-this is America. We don't need to eat bugs!!! Sorry about the interview. I hate when I walk out of a room and think of everything I wanted to say and how everything I DID say didn't quite come out the way I intended. Definitely their loss if you don't get the job! BTW, I'm anxiously awaiting your infinite knowlege and coachy tips! Hope you have a GREAT weekend!

I am still wanted an awesome backpack to take on our hikes in VA!

I hope you did better than you thought at the interview. You may be your worst critic.
I am in DC and my heel is sore sore sore from walking. I don't run for 10 weeks and this is the thanks I get! I have heard more "sure fire cures" one of which is not covered by insurance. I wouldn't intentionally eat bugs unless I was starving. Starving starving, not the starving I am right before lunch. :) There's a store in the St. Louis area that has all kinds of spiced bugs you can buy to eat. No, thanks!

Kate Geisen said...

I'd buy a couple of stability balls. I use them for chairs in my classroom for my fidgety kids...and then of course everyone wants to sit on a ball.

Kate Geisen said...

P.S. Don't feel bad about the interview. I know it's easier sometimes to expect the worst rather than pin your hopes on something, but most likely the half of your answer you managed to spit out was twice the answer someone else had. You're comparing yourself with the best you, while they only have the other applicants to compare you to. And I'm sure my boss would LOVE for me to acquire some organizational skills!

62 Comments!!! You're a crazy girl!

As a vegetarian I'm not sure whether or not I'd eat them, but I can see huge opportunities for protein to be added to different things simply by putting the bugs in giant food processor. Sustainability-wise, meat is a giant waste of resources.

Hope you're having a good Sunday and I'm sorry for the work anxiety; that stinks. You're so great in writing that all you need to do is point them to your blog!
