Top O' The Afternoon To Ya

I'm sitting at my desk at work, eating what else on this special green day???  Yep, my Green Beans!!  Yummy!  Just wish I had some green sticky notes to go with them.

I LOVE St. Patrick's Day and all it stands for:
Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

I have always made a big deal of this day with my kiddos when they were little.  I turned the toilet water green and made the milk green and added a little creme de mint so it tasted a little like Shamrock Shakes :).  We made Leprechaun traps to catch the slippery dude,  but we never did.  He always left each of the kids a gold glittery trail to a hidden gold coin (Sacagawea Dollar).  We made french toast for dinner and sprinkled it with green powdered sugar.  Green dominated our house on this 17th day of March!

I don't do as much now that the kids are older - no Leprechaun traps nor green mint flavored milk....(but I did turn the toilet water green, just cuz :)) but traditions stick and my kiddos still talk about those "old" green days and dressed the part, as much as they could (boys, I found, don't own a lot of green attire).

It was really hard for me to pass on the St. Patrick's 7K race last weekend, a tradition I've run for the past 10 years here in Denver.  It's a huge race, drawing about 5000 runners and you finish with one large green party after, with lots of green beer :).  Last year I ran a 32:28 (7:28 pace) and had such a blast after, and so looked forward to beating that time this year....but the heel had other plans.

It's been a crazy week of ups and downs with the heel where one day I feel zero progress, yet the next day a little hope.  Call is the Luck of the Irish, or my green beads around my neck, but I think next year I will be honoring my favorite traditional 7K race....

Spiritual Renewal!  The wee-bit o' Irish I have in me is ready for the renewal phase to begin!

A few parting shots from the St. Patrick's 7K race 2-years ago:

Me and me boys.

Even the hair gets into the green action!

My Neighbor, Jim whom I used to run a lot with, and his daughter.

My "old" running partner, Dennis (hopefully soon I can run with him again!!)
Happy St. Patrick's Day to all you Irish, and non-Irish alike, may you find much spiritual growth today.  And may you have many, fun, traditions in your house on this fun, green day....let me know what they are, maybe I'll have to incorporate a few new ones of my own.

What a nice post! Nice spin on the holiday too! Congrats on your race. Great time!

How do you turn the water green? Food coloring? I am a lame mom. I do none of those things. I'm not even wearing green today. The least I could do is get the toilet ready for when they get home.

Oh, you're so fun! I put a green shirt on my 7 year old. I have no idea what we're having for supper. I just don't have the energy to be fun this week. Sigh...maybe next week? My Irish ancestors would disown me.

What a great tradition you had with the kids. Keep it going as long as you can. They will always remember it.

I never did much of anything on St. Patrick's Day other than drink but that has changed as well.

I will have to adopt the true meaning behind it and thanks for shedding light on that. Very cool.

What a fun post!! I like St. Patrick's day too! In fact, tonight for dinner I'm making broccoli potato soup and giving the boys green soymilk. He he! :)

I'm sorry you weren't able to run in the race this year! But, know that this time you're taking to heal will pay off big time in the end!!

Now that i know how much you like St. Patrick's Day I really wish you could have run it!

Happy holiday to you!!!

What a great/thoughtful mom you are. =)

No special traditions, but we are having Irish burritos tonight- with thin mints.

Hope your heel feels better SOON.

Awwww, that sucks that you had to break that long of a standing tradition. Stupid stupid stupid heel.

I am actually part Irish...and have virtually no green. My grandmother would kill me.
You are awesome...sorry about the heel...

Okay, I'll do a real comment. Where are the bacon bits for those green beans?!

I kept forgetting it was St. Patty's day. I'm not Irish. Just drink like one.

Green beans for Jilly Beans. Happy Saint Patty's Day. I am 1/2 Irish. Mom is 100% Irish. We did the boring corn beef and cabbage. I did get my Saint Patrick's Day card from Mom today with an Irish Blessing and for Spiritual Renewal 2Solemn Mass Novena's, one at the Shrine of Our Lady of Knock in County Mayo, Ireland the second at The Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows in Belleville, IL.
I will offer them up for the Perpetual Healing of your heel.

I will also drink one green beer for you tonight.

Sorry you didn't get to run the race. I've never done that run, but I keep wanting to...maybe next year.

Looks like an awesome time! I celebrated St. Pat's day by getting stuck in museum and zoo traffic around Houston due to spring break for all of Houston's kiddos. It was awesome.

Hope your boot is on and that you're sleeping well from all the PT!

Sounds like good times - green toilet water - you think of everything!!! Have a great week Jill - it will all come back in due time ;-)

I'm sorry you didn't get to run that race : (

I love all the things you used to do with your kids! I do some things too, it's funny, it's almost like another Christmas in my family, the phone rang off the hook yesterday with good wishes for the day!

Keep up with the healing!!

Such a bummer after 10 years to miss your race. So sorry!

I loved the past race photos. Such a cute top.

I missed out on most of the St. Patty's day fun with the kids. One of many reasons I don't like having to work full time. When the oldest was little it seemed like I had so much more time to do all those things. I have to get back at making those little things special for the kids. They are going away to the grandparents while I race so I am going to have a First day of Spring celebration ready for them when they come home...if I can walk. ;-)

I've never heard of this version of ST Pats. I like it better than green beer though. You shoulda walked that 7k... Breaking the streak?!? Noooo

You look good in green. Great post and good take on what normally is such a drunken holiday!

I had green beans too, but didn't even think about the correlation! This was a happy post and I hope it means happy feet asap for you!

Gillie said...

Hey Jill! I love your old traditions. I am Irish and born on St Patrick's Day and I never really enjoyed the holiday all that much because it "interfered" with my birthday. But I've come to love it, because at my age, I don't want anymore birthdays!

Jenn said...

Ah-darn it. We rode on a bus the entire day for St. Patricks Day. No green beans, no green toilets....my kids will have no memories:) Our school colors are Green and white though so at least our attire was in order. Love the pics of you and your boys!

seriously I loved this post! The writing, the memories you made for your kids and most importantly, I love that someone finally put into words what all this st. patty's hype is all about...you've convinced me to start celebrating too! Thank you! Love it!

Green powdered sugar and leprechaun traps? How are we friends? You are so stinking creative and I am so lame when it comes to these things!

I can't even get the date right. Madison and I wore green on Wednesday instead of Thursday because I thought it was St Patty's Day. And she believed me when I told her. Poor child.

Anyway, sorry you didn't get to run your race, but you and I will run the 5K next year together. At more the a 10 minute per mile pace (hopefully). Bwahaha! Hang in there!

Green toilet water... Never would've thought of that on my own. My kids are young enough, they would probably think it's lime flavored Koolaid and drink it if I did that.

My daughter is still a little freaked by the leperchauns that turned our house upside down! Love that holiday, and Groundhog day. Someday I'll have to tell you about my groundhog day run idea, it would be a hoot!

We don’t see or hear much about St Patrick’s day here in SA so I’ve enjoyed reading all about it. I never realized it was so big the USA. Let’s hope next year you celebrate it with a good run.

You sound like a fun mom!! I love it when people get into St. Patricks Day! It is one of THE BEST holidays I think. Green is my favorite color. :) I am sorry you are not able to run yet and you missed out on the race. You will eventually heal up and you will run it again!!
Green beans are so yummy!
